How to fly the A340

Writer's picture: Adyan IslamAdyan Islam

We're big fans of Swiss001 on this blog. His 3 favourite planes are the A330 (the butter machine), the A340-500 (the ultimate butter machine) and the 747-8i (the extra cheese on top ultimate butter machine). Anyway, I've been flying around the A340 around Dhaka lately. I've gained some XP, so let's see how to fly it.

a) Taxi & Takeoff

Ask ATC for clearance to start your engines. After you've started them, perform the powerback procedure, where you use reverse thrust to pushback out of the gate. Then taxi to the runway. Be careful, as the A340 turns verry fast. Then, set the throttle to 80-90% power, depending on your takeoff weight. The V1 speed is 125 knots and the rotation speed is 150 knots. When you point your nose up, set the throttle to full to take off.

b) Climb & Cruise

Climb to anywhere between FL290 to FL400 and then engage the AP. Sit back and bounce a ball or read this post again.

c) Descent and landing

Once you've come close to your destination, disengage the AP and leave cruising altitude. Remember to handle the plane delicately, or if you don't have a stable hand, turn down the sensitivity settings. Your landing will probably be butter.

Sorry for the low res image
